Amazon Rankings

Hey, Amazon.com have just e-mailed me my author ranking. I can proudly announce I am #650,000.

But hold on a minute, all my but one of the books I've appeared in have disappeared from my page.  This will not stand.

I've already added one, so I better get the rest done. *laughs* And it's updated hourly. That's something else to distract me.

What about you, readers? Are you busy updating your Amazon page today? What do you think of this new feature? Has anyone else got a ranking lower than me? Anybody in triple digits?

I'll update as I climb through the rankings. Or I might descend. Then I won't mention it.

edited. Aha, my ranking is just counting books, not e-books. Got to wait until Amazon confirms me as author.

Buuuut... congratulations, regardless. Onward and ever upwards :)

  2. I got my email too. They had me way higher than they should have. I'm doing my best to ignore all that.

    1. Rusty, this is a problem I didn't even know I had. Since I don't self-pub I never thought about rankings. And I know a lot of writers try to avoid the ranking for the sake of their mental happiness.

Now I want to be in triple digits.

Sheesh, it's been an hour already and I barely moved.

    2. Your page looks nice and fat with 15 listings Simon. Good job on keeping it updated.

  4. I got the email. I refuse to check anymore, for the same reason I boycott Klout.

  5. Yeah, I didn't even really have an author page? So I'm not ranked at all? I did some setting up, but there is no rank on it yet. I defy rank!

    1. You see, Elizabeth, this is why I respect Amazon. They seem to know what motivates us a authors. Give me a ranking, and I want to be the best I can be.

I was going to be contrary about it, but it seems to be a win-win.

  6. Just look in the right place and filter out those not in direct competition. Go to your author page and select rank. The first one you see is all books. If I stopped there five digits would be intimidating, so I selected Kindle next, that cut off a full digit. Then I selected fiction, that cut the ranking by about 40%, So I went to fantasy and that cut another digit. Now if only they let me filter it down to author name of Ferguson I might get down to two digits (How many Fergusons can there be?)

  7. I don't pay any attention to the rankings. It seems that when the book first comes out, it has a good ranking, but obviously slows afterwards. I'll pay more attention to rankings when I'm in the triple digits, which I am not. But I do try to update my author page when a new book/anthology comes out.
Best of luck. You deserve at least 650...
btw, I bought Circus, and loved your story, "Welcome to the Greatest Show in the Universe." Still reading through the others, and hopefully will do a review at some point.

  8. I think I was at about 50,000 the one and only time I checked. I expected something in the millions.

  9. Ack, it doesn't mean much. I was interested to see how the anthologies I'm in were selling. But that's about it.
