Story Sold to Nature and Poetry Sales to Imaginaire

One thing about making more subs (I've upped my sub count by 50%) is that I get a lot of responses.

I'm happy to report a new sale to Nature's Futures, 'Face in the Dark', quite a dark science fiction story. Guidelines for Nature here.

And two poetry sales to Imaginaire: Mathematical Fiction. 'The Deborah Number' and 'On the Last Day Comes the Indefinable.' Guidelines for Imaginaire here.

I love the fact that there is such a thing as the Deborah Number. Hey. I don't make the stuff up, you know. It's nice to have a number.

  2. I love the concept of the Deborah Number! Congrats.

Out of curiosity, what is your sub count? WHAT IS THE FREQUENCY?

    1. Hi Elizabeth,

I'm currently maintaining a sub count of 85. I don't count poetry subs or subs to non-English markets in that. This is a bit of a 'level-up' for me. Before that I was at 40-50, and have been for a few years.

That breaks down to 45 originals and 40 reprint subs. (note one story out to 6 lit markets, counts as 6)
To maintain that I need to make 10-15 subs a week, which is challenging, to say the least.

I also need a big bag of stories. But I have that.

To sell you need to get stories in front of editors (unless you get commissioned, but that's another story), so subbing is important. But I don't want to get to a point where I feel overwhelmed by subbing. There is a time cost involved.

I think I can maintain at around 85. My method is to sub whenever, but also check in twice a week to make sure I haven't dropped below 80.

    1. You should have a number. What would the Rhonda Number do? There's a story in there.
