Non-English Markets for Short Stories

I would highly recommend Douglas Smith's Foreign Market List. Foreign markets meaning in this case non-English language markets.

I've just sold a reprint to the Romanian venue Revista SRSFF.

The nice thing about the writing business is that you can resell a story over and over again. Once the rights revert back to you, the writer is free to offer other language rights.

As you will be offering different language rights to different venues, (i.e.  Romanian language rights to a Romanian publisher, German language rights to a German publisher etc.), you are also free to submit a story  simultaneously to different venues.

Douglas Smith provides a good introduction to selling to overseas markets on his website. I would recommend it. And there's a good post from him on the Amazing Stories blog.

Have you sold a story to a non-English language market. Any recommendations for me?

  2. I've only recently sold a story to a foreign market (SF India). Haven't really gotten into it though; for one, most my sold stories are still tied up, and two, the vast majority of those foreign markets listed don't pay. Also I cringe at the idea of snail mailing a story to Europe.

    1. Hi Siobhan,

Well all my subs have been via e-mail, so no worries there. No pay, but lovely, lovely readers.

I liked your story in India SF. I think I've come across that creature before. She's intriguing.

  3. Thanks for that - it's a great idea. I've had one story stranslated into Spanish so far, but I haven't submitted to non-English markets with any kind of consistency or system. I guess I should.

  4. Nice, I've been wondering if that list was still active. The last time I looked at it, I didn't really have many stories that could be reprinted. It does seem like a bit of a hassle, but it's always worth getting one's name out to new people in new places, I guess.

    1. Rahul, you should. They'd snap your stories up. It's good for motivation and good for the old bio, if you want to say you've been published in 10 languages. Also new readers. Hoorah

  5. I seriously need to do this. Most of my reprints are for sale on Amazon, but I could still send them overseas. Will you get to see your story in Romanian? Very cool!
