Taking you Blog to the Next Level

A nice post from speculative writer Rahul Kanakia about taking your blog to the next level.  I enjoy Rahul's blog a lot, plus he's a great writer, so he get's my thumbs up for a follow.

Many of the things he mentions I don't do.

But this could all change. It would be nice to have more hits.  He mentions people linking to his blog, which I believe is important for your position in the search engine rankings.

Much to think about.

Any good tips for improving blogs? Is it something you think about?

What I've done so far

  • signed up to Google Analytics
  • tidied up the blog
  • added top stories link

  1. That's an interesting post, Deborah. It is important to take blogs to a new level and Rahul makes some important points. Interaction is important, change of content too. My favorite blog posts are those with newsy links that I wouldn't otherwise find myself.

  2. I think the most important thing really is to just sort of get out there and be part of the conversation. I spend a lot of time lurking peoples' blogs. I never even think, "Oh, you know. I could post a comment here."

By the way, I really like your feature to the right where you post about anthologies and themed issues that you're thinking submitting to. That's some good info.

    1. Interaction is primarily why I blog, Rahul. I'm thinking I might have a sub-goal of trying to interact with the UK community.
Also I like to maintain my bibliography here.

I was hesitant about blogging too much, but I now think that's foolish. People will visit or not, if the topic interests them.

Thanks for your post. It's made me think about this again.

  4. Aha. I can see that you've thought about this before. Great advice.

"make it symbolic to the kind of author you want to be"

    Wow. That's very interesting, Michael.

  5. Yep, all seems like good advice. I should blog more regularly but I'm trying real hard not to social network when I should be writing! A balance to strike.

    1. I know what you mean. Apparently I've got google analytics wrong as it's telling me I've had 3 visitors. And more than three people have commented on the post.

Ack. It's all good procrastination fodder.

    1. I love your blog, Patsy. You've got a real USP (eek) in your competition round-ups. But one can always improve. I hope you find something to help.

  7. The blog looks grand; aren't analytics included in our Blogger dashboards? Or are those less advanced?

    1. Thanks, Milo. Google Analytics is a whole new world. I now my bounce rate, and click-through rates. And there is so much more.

It's interesting. But it will take some time to think about it. You could do a lot. But then again it takes time away from writing.
