Comets and Criminals -- A New Zine for Short Stories and Poetry

I am excited to announce that fellow writer Samuel Mae has opened a new semi-pro paying zine. Comets and Criminals is open for submissions of short stories and poetry in the genres of science fiction, adventure, historical, western,  and crime and mystery. That's a really exciting genre mix.

Opening a zine is something that I've thought about from time to time. It's is a really exciting propsect, but, alas, I've never had the follow-through. So, kudos, Sam. I see that it's already up on duotrope, so I'm sure that the subs are going to start flooding in.

And, with a little luck, maybe he'll come onto this blog in a few months time, and give us some insights.

  2. Thanks for the plug, Debs! Much appreciated.

I'm excited about it. Also a bit nervous, too. It's kinda like a first date. Except i don't launch the first issue until Jan 1, 2012, so it's gonna be a very long first date.

Debs, i'd love to offer some insights (not that i have many at the moment, so perhaps basic thoughts might have to do :D). Just let me know when.

  4. That's super cool and will have to check it out. Don't find it easy to write poetry or short fiction, but enjoy reading them. :o)

  5. Thanks guys. I know that we all love to see new venues opening and wish Sam lots of luck. May all your manuscripts be standard.

Sam, I'd love to have on my blog. I've got lots of questions. I see that you've accepted a story already-- wonderful. I hope that you'll not be too busy and you'll come onto this blog in a month or so, and share your insights? I'll drop you a line.

  6. Thanks, Debs. I've alerted flash fiction writers on American Zoetrope. I suggest Sam post to sfplanet, a yahoo group for SFPA forum, at least for the scifi contributors. But when I looked at the guidelines, I didn't see a call for poetry. If Sam wants poetry, I know I can help with innovative cross-genre work.

  7. Thanks, John. I'm glad you managed to post, I don't know what's up with Word Press.

There is a call for amazing poetry in the guidelines -- now I know that you can manage some of that.

  8. Thanks, Debs. I don't know how I missed the poetry guidelines, but I see it now. I spent the last hour or two revising a pose poem, which I tried to lineate, but finally decided flash fiction format is best. I think it might be exactly what Sam might be looking for. I am submitting it today.

  9. Debs, whenever's good with you. :)

John, we certainly do want poetry. Here are the detailed poetry guidelines: http://www.cometsandcriminals.com/?page_id=52

D.U, we definitely need readers as well as writers :)

  14. Oh now that sounds exciting. Good luck to him. It is hard work running a magazine, though an online one hopefully is less so. :O)

  15. Hello Anon and aftereverafter, thanks for the comments -- you're welcome.

Simon: Rats, I'm going to get scooped by Write1 Sub1, eh? Only kidding, I look forward to reading it.

Madeline -- I know. I'm in awe of Sam. It's going to be tough, but I've a feeling he's going to love it.
