Let's Go Pollyanna

Writing's a tough old game and no mistake, and while I love a good moan, today I'm feeling good about my writing.  Let's Pollyanna it up.

What do you love about writing? Have you got anything you want to share? Care to post a  link to a story you've written? A good review?   Have you finished a chapter of your novel? Got to grips with a particular tricky character? Sold a copy of your book on Amazon? Made a new writing friend? Learnt something new, today?

Let's celebrate. Writing is so cool. We're so lucky that we've got this opportunity to express ourselves.

C'mon all you Pollyannas.

  1. I've finally gotten back into the habit of blogging again, which is always my doorway back into writing. I've been inching closer to the ending of one story, and seriously thinking on finishing my NaNo novel from last year. So nothing specific, but still feeling good.

Isn't it great when we feel good about our writing?

  2. I finally let go and am in the middle of switching my 1st person to 3rd person POV. It's a lot of work, but everything is flowing much better. Yay!

Also, I've moved up from 26 to 15 on the YouWriteOn site. If I make it to the top 10 before the end of the month, editors from Random House or Penguin will read and comment on the first 6000 words of my novel!

Anyone can read and rate them Here. It's a free site. I don't think good will ratings move me up, but any comments are great. Thanks!

  3. I've gotten this week's Write1Sub1 out to Innsmouth Free Press, and I think it actually has a chance. =]

  4. I printed my novella today to take a red pen to it. It was a hundred pages long (longer than I thought it was going to be when I started) and it felt great to think I'd finished the draft. I love the story and can't wait to get this one cleaned up a bit to see what others think.

    Good times.

  6. Charity your book looks wonderful. That's something to celebrate. And what a great competition. I don't know anything about competitions, but it seems like there are some good ones out there.

I'm going to comment later, when I set up a login account.

  7. I love Innsmouth Free Press. it's such a professional zine and the writing is top notch. Fingers crossed, Milo. That reminds me, have they go another antho call out? I managed to get a poem in their last one.

  8. Go, Rusty. You should start to think about venues. If it's SF, I hear that the top mags don't get as much novella length work as they'd like.

  9. Not to rain on this Pollyannish parade, but I received my Innsmouth rejection 24 hours later. Ouch! =]

Looks like they have two anthologies coming up with sub dates TBA.

  10. I love writing...but why? Um. I don't know! I love telling people's stories. Even people who exist only in my head.

  11. I love every ounce of it. I love the rush of a new idea, the challenge of finding exactly the right words, the pleasure of reading your own words aloud and having them sound beautiful. There's pride in completing a story, and no greater joy than having it accepted.

It's work, though. I think that's what most people don't realize. I was one of those people who assumed writing was a vacation, but I found out. You've got to slog through days when you just don't have it, and struggle to focus when you have too many stories to tell. But that only makes the end result all the more satisfying.

Oh, and if anyone's interested, here's my latest story, published by the fine folks over at The Absent Willow Review: http://absentwillowreview.com/archives/the-machine
